The second shipment of relief materials from India reaches earthquake-stricken Nepal

India has once again sent a second consignment of nine tonnes of emergency relief materials to Nepal, addressing the urgent needs of quake-affected families in the northwestern mountainous region, where residents face shortages of food, warm clothing, and medicines following a fresh tremor. A 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal just before midnight on Friday, resulting in the loss of 153 lives and over 250 injuries.

The earthquake primarily affected the Jajarkot and Rukum West districts in western Nepal, causing damage to approximately 8,000 houses, both public and private.

India has taken the lead in providing essential support to Nepal during this challenging time. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar expressed, “India’s support to Nepal remains strong and steadfast in this difficult hour .”

The second consignment, consisting of vital medical and hygiene supplies, tents, sleeping bags, and blankets, was delivered to Nepalgunj by a special Indian Air Force C-130 aircraft. Deputy Chief of the Indian mission, Prasanna Shrivastava, handed over the relief materials to Banke’s Chief District Officer, Shravan Kumar Pokhrel.

The relief materials include 625 units of plastic tarpaulin and tents, 1,000 units of sleeping bags, 1,000 blankets, 70 large-size tents, 35 packets of tent accessories, medicines, and 48 other essential items, as per officials.

In the midst of these relief efforts, another earthquake, measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale, struck Jajarkot and surrounding areas, followed by a 4.5-magnitude earthquake. The epicenter of the earthquake was located in Ramidanda, Jajarkot.

The earthquake caused further loss of life and damage to property, with some residents reporting casualties and destruction. Many affected residents are in desperate need of assistance, as their crops, food, clothing, and valuables remain buried under debris.

This recent earthquake is the most significant seismic event since the devastating earthquake of April 2015, which caused extensive damage to homes and infrastructure in Nepal.
