This Diwali Delhi would breathe easier

NEW DELHI: New Delhi is all set to be cleaner air this Diwali and a less polluted year overall, Union environment ministry and Central Pollution Control Board officials have forecasted taking into account meteorological conditions and anti-pollution steps which are beginning to show results.

And to make matter even more interesting, the SC’s recent ban on sale of firecrackers is also expected to help prevent deterioration of air beyond last year’s level.

Weather conditions such as clear skies and inflow of dry winds expected over the next week -Diwali is on Thursday -support he theory.

“This year will certainly be better than 2016. We won’t see a repeat of last year’s post-Di wali emergency conditions that prompt authorities to resort to measures such as oddeven (car rationing),” he said.

Clear skies, expected next week, are likely to create conditions for vertical and horizontal movement of air, which helps clear pollution, Saha said, explaining why a current rise in pollution will ebb.
