Threat mail to RBI: Mumbai Police arrests main accused from Gujarat, detains 2 others for questioning

Mumbai: The Mumbai Crime Branch has arrested 3 people from Vadodara, Gujarat in connection with sending a threatening email to the Reserve Bank of Mumbai, demanding the resignation of Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das.

All three have been brought to Mumbai where the interrogation of the accused is going on. One person has been identified as Adil Rafig, while another is his relative and the other person is his friend. Police are now questioning the detained people to find out the motive behind the threat emails. The device used for sending the emails is being ascertained as well.

The threat email received by the Reserve Bank of India said that its office along with those of ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank would be attacked. It said, quoting the email, ’11 bombs were detonated at various locations in Mumbai and RBI’s new central office building at Fort, HDFC House at Churchgate and ICICI Bank Tower at Bandra-Kurla Complex at 1:30 pm. There will be explosions. All 11 bombs will explode one by one.’

The police officer said that the police searched all the places mentioned in the email but nothing suspicious was found at these places. The sender had the username ‘Khilafat India’ and alleged that RBI along with some private sector banks were involved in the “biggest scam in the history of India”. The email further claimed that the sender has “solid proofs” to back their claims.

Mumbai Police said they visited all the places mentioned in the email to probe the matter but found nothing. On the complaint of the RBI head guard, the police booked the Indian Penal Code under Sections 505-1B (broadcasting false warning about a disaster or its severity so as to create panic), 505-2 (making mischievous statements) and 506- A case was registered against an unknown person under various sections including 2 (criminal intimidation).
