Three people dead after drinking spurious liquor in Sitamarhi district of Bihar

Bihar: An official said that three persons died after allegedly consuming spurious liquor in Sitamarhi district of Bihar. Acting on a tip-off, local police reached the hospital on the intervening night of Saturday, but one person had already died, they added.

Bihar: An official said that At least three people have died after drinking spurious liquor in Bihar. Three persons have been arrested so far on charges of selling fake liquor, they added. This incident happened in Sitamarhi district of Bihar. At least five people were killed in yet another suspected hooch tragedy in three neighbouring hamlets under the jurisdiction of Bajpatti police station in the Sitamarhi district of dry Bihar in the last 24 hours.

One person was admitted to hospital in this incident. After receiving information about this incident local police reached the hospital on the intervening night of Saturday, but one person had already died, police added. In a statement giving information about this incident, police said, “Acting on a tip-off that two persons were undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Sitamarhi after drinking spurious liquor, police reached the spot in the intervening night of Friday and Saturday.”

They added, “However, by the time they arrived at the hospital, one person identified as Awadesh Kumar had died. The exact cause of death can only be ascertained after post-mortem.” In its statement, police further said, “Another person identified as Roshan Rai is undergoing treatment at the hospital and cops are in touch with his family members.”

During the course of investigation, police came to know that two more persons had died in the area after drinking spurious liquor. It added,”Villagers informed police about the death of two more persons in the area. However, their bodies were cremated without informing police.”

The police officer said that three persons have been arrested so far on charges of selling spurious liquor. According to the information, they have been identified as Raj Nadan Sahni, Surya Pratap Sahni and Shatrughan Sahni. They added Around 90 bottles of liquor were also recovered from their possession.

In April 2016, The Nitish Kumar-led government in Bihar had banned sale and consumption of alcohol in the state. However, incidents of smuggling of liquor continue to be reported in the state notwithstanding the ongoing drive against bootleggers.
