TMC panchayat pradhan killed in North 24 Parganas, West Bengal

Kolkata: On Friday, police said that a Trinamool Congress (TMC) panchayat pradhan was killed by assailants in a crowded market in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. Police have arrested a person in this incident.

At around 7 pm on Thursday evening, the attackers threw bombs targeting TMC Panchayat head Rupchand Mondal of Amdanga at Kamdevpur Haat. A senior officer said that Mandal was attacked while he was talking on his mobile phone.

Mondal was taken to a local health facility and later shifted to a private hospital in Barasat where he succumbed to his injuries. He was killed days after another TMC panchayat member was killed in Joynagar in neighboring South 24 Parganas district.

On learning about Mandal’s death, area residents and Trinamool Congress supporters blocked National Highway-34 demanding immediate arrest of the culprits. BJP leader Dilip Ghosh claimed that two factions of the ruling TMC were involved in the murder.

Barrackpore MP Arjun Singh visited the area and urged the authorities to arrest those responsible for creating unrest in the area. Singh said it “appears to be a planned murder and the police should find the culprits”. Earlier in the week, TMC panchayat leader Saifuddin Laskar was shot dead in Joynagar area of South 24 Parganas district.
