To rein in fake news, I & B Ministry blocks 18 Indian and four Pakistani YouTube channels

YouTube channels are the simplest thing to set up. In order to gain popularity and viewership, you tubers spread plenty of false information and fake news, which is dangerous to the country and society as a whole. It creates a rift among people.

Taking cognizance of fake news, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting blocked 18 Indian and four Pakistan-based YouTube news channels for posting fake news and anti-India content. In a statement, the ministry said these YouTube channels used logos of TV news channels and false thumbnails to mislead viewers.

Ministry uses emergency powers

The ministry decided to use the emergency powers under the IT Rules, 2021 and issued orders on April 4, 2022 for the blocking of twenty-two YouTube-based news channels, three Twitter accounts, one Facebook account, and one news website.

The blocked YouTube channels had an increasing viewership of over 260 crore, and were used to spread fake news, and synchronised disinformation over social media on subjects sensitive from the viewpoint of national security, India’s foreign relations, and public order, the ministry said.

Disseminate fake news.

The ministry said these YouTube channels were used to post fake news on various subjects, such as the Indian Armed Forces, Jammu and Kashmir. Besides this, anti-India content is shared by multiple social media accounts operated from Pakistan.

It was observed that a significant amount of false content published by these Indian YouTube based channels was related to the ongoing situation in Ukraine, and was aimed at jeopardising India’s foreign relations with other countries, it added.

The ministry said that the blocked Indian YouTube channels were using templates and logos of certain TV news channels, including images of their news anchors, to mislead the viewers into believing that the news was authentic.

False thumbnails were used, and the titles and thumbnails of the videos were frequently altered to increase the virility of content on social media. In certain cases, it was also observed that systematic anti-India fake news was originating from Pakistan, “the ministry stated.”

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has taken a bold decision. Several YouTube channels are constantly attempting to create schisms in society in the name of religion, caste, and so on.On YouTube, you can find all kinds of information and treatments.Many of them only misguide people and nothing else.
