Tripura civic body polls: BJP registers sliding victory, clinches 217 of 222 seats

Agartala: The ruling BJP was on November 28 swept the civic body elections in Tripura where counting of votes was underway for 222 seats of Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC), on which elections were held on November 25.. The saffron party has clinched the Khowai Municipal council, Kumarghat Municipal Council, Sabroom Nagar Panchayat and Amarpur Nagar Panchayat – bagging 217 of 222 seats. The CPM has won three seats, the Trinamool and TIPRA Motha one seat each.

Of the 334 total seats — including AMC with 51 wards, 13 municipal councils, and six nagar panchayats.– the BJP has won 329, having been elected unopposed in 112 seats earlier.

The counting of votes in connection with General Election to the Municipal and Nagar Panchayat, 2021 for 6 Nagar Panchayats, seven Municipal Council and the Agartala Municipal Corporation will be conducted in 13 counting centers all over the state. Altogether there are 334 seats in the urban local bodies, including Agartala Municipal Corporation (51 wards), 13 municipal councils, and 6 Nagar panchayats in the state.

The ruling BJP, under Chief Minister Biplab Deb, has fielded candidates in all seats in the Tripura civic polls and has already won 112 out of the total 334 seats uncontested in the Agartala Municipal Corporation and 19 urban bodies.

The ruling BJP has swept the civic body elections by winning all the seats of the 51-member Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) and clinching several other urban local bodies. The opposition TMC and CPI(M) have failed to open their account in the AMC.

Votes are being counted for elections to several civic bodies including Agartala Municipal Corporation, or AMC, in Tripura today. The elections were held amid fierce political fight between the state’s ruling BJP and the Trinamool Congress.

Tight security in place in Tripura

In the remaining 222 seats, as many as 785 contestants are in the fray after 36 candidates withdrew their nominations.

The elections were fought mainly between the three parties – the BJP, the TMC, and CPI(M).

Altogether 81.54 per cent of over 4.93 lakh voters exercised their franchise for elections to Tripura’s 14 civic bodies on Thursday amid allegations of political violence by opposition camps. Officials in the State Election Commission (SEC), however, said no clash or voting machine-related problem was reported from the poll-bound areas.
