New Delhi: New Owner Elon Musk announced that he will form a ‘content moderation council’ for Twitter which will certainly have diverse viewpoints. Musk, whose $44 billion deal to take the social network private was completed Thursday, had indicated previously that he thought Twitter’s content moderation standards were too strict and that he didn’t believe in lifetime bans. After closing the USD44 billion deal, he tweeted, “Twitter will be forming a content moderation council with widely diverse viewpoints. No major content decisions or account reinstatements will happen before that council convenes.”

The Tesla CEO also raised suspicion among social media users when he tweeted “Let the good times roll” on his Twitter shortly after acquiring the social media platform and closing the deal. He also tweeted, “Comedy is now legal on Twitter.”

Advertisers and users are waiting to see if the new owner’s views mean high-profile personalities blocked from the site, including former US President Donald Trump, will be allowed back. Musk’s tweet on Friday indicated that no resumption is imminent.

In most other ways, the billionaire wasted no time taking complete control. Musk appointed himself chief executive officer, dismissed senior management and immediately began reshaping strategy at one of the world’s most influential social media platforms. The flood of requests underscore the challenge Elon Musk faces- balancing a promise to restore free speech while preventing the platform from descending into a “hellscape,” as he had vowed in an open letter to advertisers on Thursday.

Musk, 51, is replacing Parag Agrawal, who was fired along with three other top executives, a person familiar with the matter said, asking not to be identified discussing internal deliberations. Former US President Donald Trump, who was permanently banned from Twitter over accusations of inciting violence after the 6 January, 2021 capitol riots, welcomed the takeover, but said little about a return to Twitter. “I am very happy that Twitter is now in sane hands, and will no longer be run by Radical Left Lunatics and Maniacs who truly hate our country.”

The mercurial entrepreneur, who also leads Tesla Inc. and SpaceX, may eventually cede the Twitter CEO role in the longer term, the person added. Twitter representatives declined to comment. Others asked Musk to reverse penalties inflicted by the social media platform. In response to @catturd2, an anonymous account with 852,000 followers, known for being a big supporter of Trump’s election fraud claims, and who said it was “shadowbanned,” Musk tweeted “I will be digging in more today.”
