New Delhi: Twitter has restored the account of former Congress President Rahul Gandhi. Twitter had temporarily suspended Rahul Gandhi’s account after he posted a picture of the relatives of a nine-year-old rape victim from Delhi. Then it was locked. According to sources, other Congress leaders whose Twitter handles were locked for sharing this picture have also been restored.
A Congress functionary said that along with Rahul Gandhi, some other party leaders had also shared this picture. Twitter handles of these leaders were also locked by Twitter. All handles are unlocked. Significantly, after the locking of the handles of Rahul Gandhi and other party leaders, the Congress also attacked Twitter. Congress had informed about Rahul Gandhi’s Twitter handle being temporarily suspended and then locked.
Sources said the Twitter accounts of some of the party leaders who had shared the same pictures have also been restored.
“Rahul Gandhi’s Twitter account has been unlocked,” a party functionary said, adding the accounts of some of the leaders have also been restored.
The former Congress chief had made a strong outburst on Friday accusing Twitter of “interfering in the national political process” and said shutting down of his handle amounted to an “attack on the country’s democratic structure”.
Gandhi, in a YouTube video statement titled “Twitter’s dangerous game”, alleged that it was not a neutral and objective platform and was “beholden to the government”.
Questioning Twitter’s action, Gandhi had said the company was denying millions of his followers the right to an opinion, which was unfair.
Gandhi had alleged, “It is now clear that Twitter is not really a neutral, objective platform. It is a biased platform. It is something that listens to the government of the time.”
