Two-storey house collapses in Punjab: One killed, 5 workers trapped amid ongoing construction

Punjab: In yet another distressing incident in Preet Colony, one of the five laborers lost his life after he was trapped under debris after a two-storey house collapsed on Thursday, police confirmed. The accident occurred amid ongoing construction activities aimed at raising the lintel of the house. Rescue operations began immediately, during which three laborers were pulled out of the debris. Sadly, one was declared dead and the other two were immediately taken to PGIMER, Chandigarh for medical treatment. Efforts are still on to rescue the two remaining trapped labourers.

Several teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police, Punjab Police and fire units were involved in the rescue operation. An unexpectedly loud explosion was reported at the time of the building collapse, increasing the urgency of rescue efforts.

Rajinder Kaur, the owner of the house, unveiled that the structure was originally built in 1984. The ongoing work involved using jacks to lift the lintel of the house, a process that was underway when the tragedy struck. In light of this incident, Deputy Commissioner Preeti Yadav emphasized that the administration’s swift focus was on ensuring the safe rescue of all labourers caught in the debris. She also announced that an inquiry would be conducted to ascertain the cause of the collapse. Yadav, alongside Senior Superintendent of Police Gulneet Khurana, took charge of overseeing the rescue operations.

This unfortunate incident has thrown light on construction safety standards and emergency response mechanisms for such unexpected disasters. The community awaits further updates as efforts to rescue the remaining workers continue and authorities begin investigating the incident.
