UK Former PM David Cameron appointed as new Foreign Secretary, replaces James Cleverly

British: On Monday,Former British Prime Minister David Cameron returned to government as UK Foreign Secretary. The former prime minister’s unexpected appointment comes after Suella Braverman was removed as Home Secretary and replaced by James Cleverly, according to report, leaving the top job at the Foreign Office vacant.

The reshuffle in the UK government was triggered by the sacking of Suella Braverman after she criticised the police for how it handles pro-Palestinian protests. Notably, Cameron is not an elected member of the UK Parliament and his appointment is endorsed by the Sunak government in a major cabinet reshuffle following a controversy that broke out after the Indian-Origin foreign secretary wrote a “controversial” piece.

She is considered as divisive figure who drew anger for accusing police of being too lenient with pro-Palestinian protesters. She was replaced by James Cleverly, who had been serving as the Foreign Secretary since September 2022.

Soon afterwards, it was announced that David Cameron has been appointed Foreign Secretary. According to a statement released by the Sunak’s office, King Charles had approved a seat for Cameron in Britain’s upper chamber, the House of Lords.

He was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 2010 to 2016 and resigned that year after losing the Brexit referendum. He had supported the campaign for the UK to remain in the European Union. He was succeeded by Theresa May, his home secretary.

David Cameron’s appointment as foreign secretary is likely to please more centrist Conservatives, who think his international experience will help steady the ship, said experts. Cameron on social media platform X wrote,”The Prime Minister has asked me to serve as his Foreign Secretary and I have gladly accepted. Though I may have disagreed with some individual decisions, it is clear to me that Rishi Sunak is a strong and capable Prime Minister, who is showing exemplary leadership at a difficult time.”

Moreover, such leaders have also been dismayed by Braverman’s views on issues such as immigration, policing and homelessness. He added,”We are facing a daunting set of international challenges, including the war in Ukraine and the crisis in the Middle East. At this time of profound global change, it has rarely been more important for this country to stand by our allies, strengthen our partnerships and make sure our voice is heard.”
