UK Minister On India’s G20 Leadership: “Right Presidency At Right Time”

British Security Minister Tom Tugendhat has praised India's leadership in its role as the president of the G20, stating that India's presidency has been incredibly important in addressing global challenges. He noted that India's leadership comes at a crucial time when the world is facing various issues.

British Security Minister Tom Tugendhat praised India’s leadership during its G20 presidency, highlighting the country’s effective efforts in addressing global challenges, including food security. Tugendhat stated that India’s G20 presidency is happening at the right time and is providing essential leadership as the world faces various complex issues.

During its G20 presidency, India has focused on concerns of the Global South, such as food, fuel, and fertilizer, while also emphasizing inclusive global growth, sustainable development goals (SDGs), and green development.

Tugendhat praised India’s efforts in promoting the consumption and production of millet as a viable solution to address the issue of food insecurity. He highlighted that India’s leadership within the G20 is of paramount importance, particularly in the face of the numerous challenges that the global community is currently grappling with. Tugendhat emphasized that India’s active role in guiding the G20 reflects its significant contribution to addressing these challenges and providing leadership on crucial matters of global concern.

In an interview, Tugendhat delved into the bilateral ties between India and the UK, emphasizing that there is no debate or doubt in his country regarding New Delhi’s status as an “essential ally” of London. This statement underscores the high level of recognition and importance that the UK attributes to its relationship with India, highlighting the strategic significance of the partnership between the two nations. Tugendhat’s assertion reaffirms the strong and mutually beneficial nature of the alliance between India and the UK.

Regarding a potential India-UK trade deal, Tugendhat expressed confidence that an agreement beneficial to both nations can be reached. He mentioned that officials from both sides are actively working on the deal.

The India-UK relationship reached a significant milestone as it was elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during a virtual summit held between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson in May 2021. This partnership aims to strengthen and broaden ties between the two countries in several key areas over a span of ten years. The areas of focus include trade, defense, security, climate change, and people-to-people connections. This partnership reflects the commitment of both nations to enhance cooperation and collaboration across a wide range of important issues and promote mutual benefits.
