United Kingdom: Liz Truss was appointed Britain’s next prime minister at the Balmoral Estate in Scotland by Queen Elizabeth II, shortly after Boris Johnson called on the monarch to formally tender his resignation. Ms. Truss travelled to the 96-year-old monarch’s Balmoral Castle residence in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, to meet the Queen who formally asked her to form a new government.

Breaking tradition, it is the first time in Queen Elizabeth’s 70-year reign that the transfer of power is taking place at Balmoral instead of Buckingham Palace in London. The change in the venue has fueled rumors about the 96-year-old Queen’s health. The former foreign secretary, 47, was seen in an official photograph shaking hands with the monarch to accept her offer to form a new government and become the 15th prime minister of her 70-year reign.

Liz Truss took office a day after 172,000 members of Britain’s Conservative Party elected her leader in a tough race against former Indian-origin Chancellor Rishi Sunak.

“The Queen welcomed The Right Honorable Elizabeth Truss MP into the audience today and urged her to form a new administration,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement.

“Ms Truss accepted Her Majesty’s offer and kissed her appointment as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury,” the statement added.
