New Delhi: Umar Khalid got interim bail on Friday, December 23, so he was released from Tihar jail in view of attending his sister’s wedding. An interim bail order has been granted to him by a Delhi court so that he can participate in his sister’s forthcoming marriage. The court also warned him not to talk to the media or use social media.

Umar Khalid has to surrender on December 30, as per the court’s order.

Umar Khalid and several others were booked under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and provisions of the Indian Penal Code for their alleged involvement in the 2020 Delhi riots. They were considered the masterminds behind the attack, and in this incident, about 53 people died and over 700 were injured.

The violence had taken place while the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) were going on.

Delhi’s Karkardooma court earlier this month gave Khalid and United Against Hate member Khalid Saifi a clean chit in a case associated with the 2020 Delhi riots. The two were released on bail in this case, but they had to remain in jail because they are accused in several other cases.

Earlier in October, the Delhi High Court rejected the bail plea of Khalid, saying the anti-CAA and NRC protests were prima facie orchestrated at various conspiratorial meetings that were attended by Khalid.
