Undiagnosed pneumonia outbreak sweeps through China, hospitals flooded with sick children

Beijing: China, which is still recovering from the devastating effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, now faces a new health emergency: a mysterious pneumonia outbreak sweeping through schools and resulted hospital being flooded with sick children. This alarming situation, reminiscent of the early days of the COVID crisis, has led to a surge in hospitalizations, casting an ominous shadow over the country’s healthcare system.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially sought detailed report from China on an increase in respiratory illnesses and cases of pneumonia in children. The move came after media reported that Chinese hospitals have been “overwhelmed with sick children” as an outbreak of pneumonia escalates in cities across the country, including Beijing.

The epicentres of this outbreak are Beijing and Liaoning province, 500 miles northeast, where hospitals are struggling to cope with an influx of sick children, straining their resources to the breaking point. Local media reports suggest that school closures are imminent due to the outbreak. The affected children present with unusual symptoms, including lung inflammation and high fever, but noticeably lack the typical cough and other signs associated with flu, RSV, and other respiratory illnesses.

The severity of the situation has led to the suspension of classes in some schools, as both students and teachers have fallen ill, a situation reminiscent of the early days of Covid-19.

Undiagnosed pneumonia cases have surged, according to Chinese hospitals, especially since the National Day vacation in early October. Even if the epidemic is severe, no fatalities have been documented as of yet.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has formally requested comprehensive data from China over a rise in respiratory ailments and documented paediatric pneumonia clusters. “It is unclear if these are associated with the overall increase in respiratory infections previously reported by Chinese authorities or separate events,” it said.

WHO advises people in China to follow measures to reduce the risk of respiratory illnesses. These steps include getting vaccinated, avoiding sick people, staying at home when sick, getting tested and receiving medical attention when necessary, wearing masks when necessary, making sure there is adequate ventilation, and regularly washing your hands.

Chinese hospitals, especially children’s hospitals, are struggling to cope with the influx of patients. The situation reflects the seriousness of the outbreak, calling for a rapid response and a thorough investigation into the cause of the disease. With the onset of winter and the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions, the situation is being closely monitored for any possible surge.
