Union minister Smriti Irani meets President D Murmu amid row over Adhir Chowdhury’s ‘rashtrapatni’ comment

New Delhi: Union Minister Smriti Irani today met President Draupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The meeting came a day after Irani had raised the issue of humiliation of Draupadi Murmu by Congress leader Adhir Chowdhury in the Lok Sabha who had called Murmu the ‘Rashtrapatni. Smriti Irani was accompanied by Ministers of State from two of her portfolios – Mahendra Munjpara, Minister of State for Women and Child Development and John Barla, Minister of State for Minority Affairs – also called on Draupadi Murmu.

Taking to Twitter, Rashtrapati Bhavan tweeted, Smt Smriti Irani, Union Minister for Women & Child Development and Minority Affairs along with Dr Mahendra Munjpara, MoS for Women & Child Development and Shri John Barla, MoS for Minority Affairs, called on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

After the meeting, Taking to the Twitter Smriti Irani shared a picture and informed about her meeting with the newly elected President of India along with the MoS for Women & Child Development Dr Mahendra Munjpara, and MoS for Minority Affairs John Barla. Union Minister Smriti Irani tweeted, “Had the privilege of calling upon the Honourable President of India Droupadi Murmu Ji…”

On Thursday, The Union minister raised the issue in Parliament.Chowdhury’s remark snowballed into a massive controversy with BJP MPs and Ministers in both Houses of Parliament demanding Congress chief Sonia Gandhi’s apology.Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury stoked massive controversy after referring to President Murmu as ‘Rashtrapatni (wife of the nation)’. Defending his comment, the Congress leader said that it was ‘a slip of tongue’. The uproar in the Lok Sabha turned into a bigger controversy after there was a brief exchange between Sonia Gandhi and Smriti Irani. Two different versions of what happened have emerged with the BJP accusing Sonia Gandhi of intimidating the BJP women MPs and the Congress accusing Smriti Irani of insulting and abusing Sonia Gandhi inside the House.

On Wednesday, Adhir Chowdhury addressed President Droupadi Murmu as ‘rashtrapatni’ as he was giving an interview to a channel about the Congress’s protest against the questioning of Sonia Gandhi by the ED. Chowdhury announced that he had sought time to meet the President. Speaking to the media on Thursday, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury offered to apologise if the President was offended by his remark. He called the BJP leaders “hypocrites” and ruled out the possibility of tendering an apology to them.
