UP: ED seizes gangster Mukhtar Ansari and his son’s assets worth Rs 7 3.43 lakh in Mau

Lands, building and bank deposit worth Rs 73.43 lakh in possession of gangster Mukhtar Ansari and his son were confiscated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Ansari is currently serving life imprisonment in the 1991 Awadhesh Rai murder case.

Varanasi: Central probe agency continues crackdown against mafia Mukhtar Ansari and his family members. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Saturday attached properties worth over Rs 73.43 lakh belonging to the former criminal-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari and his son Abbas Ansari in Ghazipur and Mau, as part of a money laundering investigation.

Lands, building and bank deposit worth Rs 73.43 lakh in possession of gangster Mukhtar Ansari and his son were confiscated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Ansari is currently serving life imprisonment in the 1991 Awadhesh Rai murder case.

The properties had a book value of Rupees 73,43,900 and were acquired by Abbas Ansari at an undervalued consideration of Rupees 71.94 lakh as against the government rate of Rupees 6.23 crore.

The attached properties include land measuring 1,538 sq. ft. situated at arazi no. 604, Mauja Rajdepur Dehati of Tehsil Sadar in Ghazipur district apart from a commercial building constructed over it, and a plot of land measuring 6,020 sq. ft. situated at arazi no. 169 in Mauja Jahangirabad, Pargana under Tehsil-Sadar in Mau district, the agency said in a statement.

The agency said that Mukhtar and his family members had occupied government land and built a warehouse on it and hired on rent by Food Corporation of India Limited and rent was paid to the family members of Muktar, the ED said.

The ED alleged that these properties were acquired by Abbas at undervalued consideration of Rs 71.94 lakh as against government rate of Rs 6.23 crore.

The ED also said that it attached Rs. 1.5 lakh in form of balance lying in bank account of Mukhtar under the provisions of Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002.

The ED raids is based on the several cases registered by Uttar Pradesh Police against Mukhtar and his close aides.

Earlier, the ED confiscated seven immovable properties having book value Rs 1.5 Crore, in the form of plot of lands in district Mau and Jalaun, Uttar Pradesh belonging to Afshan Ansari, wife of Mukhtar and Vikas Construction, a firm owned by Mukhtar and his relatives.

Till date, three persons — Mukhtar, his son Abbas, who is a sitting MLA from Mau Sadar constituency, Atif Raza, brother-in-law of Mukhtar have been arrested by ED, who arepresently in judicial custody.

The ED has filed a charge sheet against these three persons before the Special PMLA court. The court has taken cognizance of the same.

The case against Ansari was registered at Hazratganj police station in Lucknow. A charge sheet was filed against Ansari and 24 other co-accused in this case. The prosecution alleged that accused Ansari and other co-accused were part of a gang which had involvement in several crimes including murder, extortion, kidnapping and abduction.
