Last month in a major political development in Uttar Pradesh BJP candidate Ghanshyam Singh Lodhi led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath won the Lok Sabha bypoll in Rampur, a stronghold of Samajwadi Party (SP) big shot Azam Khan. Veteran SP politician Azam Khan resigned after being elected to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly in the most recent state election, leaving a vacancy in the Rampur Lok Sabha seat.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Khan won the Rampur seat to become a member of parliament. The vacancy in the Lok Sabha seat was created by the resignation of former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav after he was elected an MLA in state Assembly polls.
