Lucknow: Police in Uttar Pradesh have begun an investigation into a video in which a Hindu priest is seen reportedly threatening to kidnap and rape Muslim women while speaking to a crowd outside a mosque in Sitapur district, approximately 100 kilometres from Lucknow.
From inside a jeep, a guy dressed in saffron robes, purportedly the local mahant in the small village of Khairabad, addresses a crowd. In the backdrop, a man dressed in a police uniform can be seen.
The individual appears to make sectarian and offensive remarks while being applauded by the throng with shouts of “Jai Shri Ram.”
The individual claims that he was the target of a murder plot and that a sum of Rs. 28 lakh has been collected as a reward.
He then allegedly threatens to kidnap Muslim women and publicly rape them if a Muslim harasses any girl in the neighbourhood. The crowd erupts in applause in response to the threat.
Mohammed Zubair, co-founder of a fact-checking website, shared the video, claiming that it was captured on April 2 but that the police had taken no action after five days.
Sitapur police responded to his tweet by saying that a senior officer is investigating the incident and that action will be done based on the evidence.
