Prayagraj/UP: In Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, a 20-year-old youth attacked a bus conductor with a knife on his neck after a dispute over ticket fare. The accused confessed to his crime in a purported video. In which he alleged that he attacked the bus conductor for ‘insulting Prophet Muhammad’.
The police later entered a college and caught the accused who was hiding. He also tried to escape from the police but was caught in an encounter after being shot in the leg. According to Prayagraj Police, this incident unfolded on Friday and the accused has been identified as Lareb Hashmi (20). He stabbed bus conductor Harikesh Vishwakarma (24) after a dispute over ticket price.
Hashmi is a first year engineering student. He attacked Vishwakarma with a cleaver, in which he suffered serious injuries on his neck and other parts of the body. After this Hashmi jumped off the bus and entered a college campus to hide. Hashmi allegedly made a video inside the college and uploaded it on social media.
In the purported video, Hashmi is seen confessing to the crime and accusing the bus conductor of indulging in blasphemy and ‘insulting the Prophet Muhammad’. In the video, he is seen waving the knife with which he had cut the conductor.
In the video, accused Hashmi is also heard taking the names of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Yogi Adityanath. Another video taken from inside the bus shows Hashmi running out with a knife in his hand. Later, while narrating the incident, bus driver Mangala Yadav said that ‘suddenly there was an attack inside the bus. I heard a voice and then stopped the bus.’
Yadav further said that he swiftly took Vishwakarma to the hospital for treatment. After this incident, Prayagraj Police caught Hashmi from inside the college where he was hiding. Later, when a police team took him to recover the weapon used in the crime, he allegedly fired at the police.
However, in retaliation by the police, he was shot in the leg and he was arrested. He has been rushed to the hospital for treatment of bullet injury. Prayagraj’s Yamunanagar area Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Abhinav Tyagi said that after the incident, the accused was arrested by the police and a case was registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.
Further investigation is ongoing. Regarding the accused, the DCP said that Hashmi is a first year student of the United Engineering College of the city and lives in Hajiganj area of Prayagraj. His father, Mohammad Yunus, runs a poultry farm in the city.
