New Delhi: The US mission in India has so far issued a record-breaking 82,000 student visas in 2022. Indian students have received more US student visas than any other country. Indian students comprise nearly 20% of all international students studying in the US, with the Open Doors report in 2021 showing there were nearly 1.7 lakh students from India in the 2020-2021 academic year.
The embassy said in a statement that The US embassy in New Delhi and consulates in Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai prioritized the processing of student visa applications from May to August to ensure that as many eligible students as possible reach their programs of study in time for scheduled start dates.
“We issued more than 82,000 student visas this summer alone, more than in any previous year. This shows that the United States remains the most sought-after country for higher education for most Indian families,” said Charge d’affaires Patricia Lasina, the most senior US diplomat in India. She futher said, “We are glad to see that so many students were able to obtain visas and reach their universities after the delays in previous years due to the COVID-19 pandemic”.
Minister Counselor for Consular Affairs Don Heflin said, “International student mobility is central to US diplomacy, and nowhere is the contribution of students bigger than in India.”the embassy says students seeking assistance about studying in the US should download the EducationUSA India app, available for free on iOS and Android devices to get the latest information about college application process and which “is a quick and easy first step to planning higher education in the United States.” This also highlights the important contributions Indian students “make to both our countries as they build life-long connections with American peers to maintain and grow international partnerships”, Lacina said.

According to the latest UK Immigration Statistics published on August 25, 2022, nearly 118,000 Indian students received a student visa in the year ending June 2022 – up 89% from previous year. India has now overtaken China as the largest nationality being issued sponsored study visas in the UK. Ellis had recently said, “India first again. I’m delighted that Indian nationals were issued the largest number of UK study, work and visitor visas in the year ending June 2022.”The US has remained open to international students throughout the pandemic, and the US government and higher education institutions implemented measures in 2020 to safely welcome international students in-person, online and via hybrid learning methods.
