New York: US President Joe Biden on Friday issued a challenge to Democratic voters: if they choose at least two more Senators in the November elections, it may be possible for Democrats to end the filibuster and reinstate federal abortion rights for women.
At a Democratic National Committee rally, Biden asserted that the two more Democrats would enable the DNC-controlled Senate to remove a legislative roadblock known as the filibuster, which calls for a 60-vote majority to be overridden.
Democrats currently have a slim majority in the Senate, and its two senators, Kyrsten Sinema and Joe Manchin of West Virginia, have opposed ending the filibuster.
According to Biden’s statement, he would support a vote to abolish the filibuster, which can be decided by a simple majority.
For any such effort to succeed, Democrats would need to gain two seats in the Senate to retain control of the House. The majority of forecasters believe Republicans will likely take control of the House.
In the run-up to the Nov. 8 congressional elections, Biden has restored protections lost in the Supreme Court’s June decision to overrule the seminal 1973 Roe v. Wade case, a primary topic of his stump speeches.
Biden urged female voters to support the election of Democrats.
I don’t believe the Republicans have any idea about the influence that American women have. They’re about to learn, I’ll tell you that much. “
The Current Population Survey reports that 68.4% of women and 65.0% of men cast ballots in the 2020 election. About 9.7 million more women than men voted. Since the Supreme Court’s decision on Roe, there has been a surge in women registering to vote.
