Washington: The Biden administration has been sending missiles to Ukraine to fight against Russia. It has decided to send Ukraine a small number of high-tech, medium-range rocket systems and other weapons. Ukrainian leaders have been demanding such weapons for a long time to stop Russian progress in the Donbas region.
The rocket systems are part of a new $700 million tranche of security help for Ukraine from the US that will also contain helicopters, Javelin anti-tank weapon systems, tactical vehicles and spare parts, according to two senior administration officials.
The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity to preview the weapons package that will be formally unveiled on Wednesday.
The US is providing the advanced rocket systems with the view of helping Ukraine to combat strong Russian artillery barrages. The Ukrainian can target deep inside Russia to make the ongoing war more ferocious.
President Joe Biden made it clear the US is ready to provide more advanced rocket systems and munitions that will help the war-torn country to strike targets on the battlefield in Ukraine. Biden stated on Monday that the US would not send rocket systems that could strike Russia.
The Ukrainians have guaranteed US officials that they will not fire rockets into Russian territory, as per the senior administration officials. According to one official, the advanced rocket systems will allow Ukrainian forces to target Russian assets inside Ukraine with greater accuracy.
Biden further added, “We are not encouraging or enabling Ukraine to strike beyond its borders.” We do not want to prolong the war just to inflict pain on Russia. “
Putin has incessantly warned the West against sending lethal weapons to Ukraine. The Kremlin said Putin held an 80-minute telephone call last week with the leaders of France and Germany in which he warned against the continued transfer of Western weapons.
The US has made a commitment of about $5 billion in security aid to Ukraine.
