Jailed veteran politician Azam Khan had a cordial relationship with Mulayam and Akhilesh. He was one of the founding members of the Samajwadi Party. Political turmoil takes place with the passing of time. After the loss of assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh, the rift has widened between Azam Khan and Akhilesh Yadav.

On Sunday, Azam refused to meet party president Akhiesh Yadav’s representative, MLA Ravidas Mehrotra, and his supporters, who had reached Sitapur jail to meet him.

Walking out of the Sitapur jail after waiting for almost an hour, SP leader Mehrotra tried to patch up the issue by saying that Azam was apparently unwell but confirmed that he had reached Sitapur jail on the directions of the SP chief. “We are here at the direction of the party president to reiterate that the Samajwadi Party has been behind him and will continue to do whatever is possible to seek justice for him,” Mehrotra said.

Recently, when Akhilesh and Azam resigned from their Lok Sabha membership, Azam said that both of them would now get together and take on the BJP on the floor of the house. Then why would he be unhappy after this? Let me be clear, Azam Khan is with SP and SP is with Azam Khan, “he said. Mehrotra went on to express apprehensions about the threat to Azam Khan’s life in jail. He, however, did not reveal the basis on which he was expressing such fears regarding Khan’s security.

Meanwhile, in Lucknow, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav spoke in favour of Azam Khan and said that the party has firmly stood with him all along and will support him in every possible way in the future as well.

Azam had a meeting with SP chief Akhilesh’s estranged uncle, Shivpal Yadav, when the latter went to meet him at Sitapur jail. Almost all the cases against Azam Khan have been quelled and he could walk out of jail in the coming days. That could spell further trouble for SP.

On the other hand, the Samajwadi Party was quick to declare that MLA Ravidas Mehrotra had gone to meet Azam on his own accord and not as a part of any official delegation from the party.
