Uttarakhand: Elderly woman, 70, suffers serious injuries in pet Pitbull attack; Owner booked

Haridwar: In yet another incident of dog attack that unfolded in Uttarakhand’s Haridwar district, a 70-year-old woman sustained grievous injuries on Sunday after being attacked by a pit bull, police said. The dog attack victim was referred to AIIMS Rishikesh from Roorkee Civil Hospital, where she was initially brought, owing to her serious condition, sources reported citing a doctor.

The doctor said the elderly woman was bleeding abundantly when she was rushed to Roorkee Civil Hospital. The dog attack left wound marks all over the victim’s body, Dr Vandana informed. A case is being registered against the dog owner on the basis of the woman’s son complaint, Roorkee Civil Lines police station in-charge RK Saklani said. According to the police, the incident took place when the woman was on her way to visit someone in her neighbourhood.

The police are initiating a case based on the filed complaint. Dr Vandana at the Civil Hospital noted the presence of wounds covering the woman’s whole body.

Meanwhile, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has ordered the State shall be “primarily responsible” to pay compensation in cases of attacks by stray animals such as dogs and cattle.

In dog bite cases, it has been said, the assistance shall be a minimum of ₹ 10,000 “per teeth mark” and a minimum of ₹ 20,000 per 0.2 cm of wound where the flesh has come off.

In recent times, several incidents of delivery personnel and little children being bitten by, or chased by, and also mauled in some cases by strays or any breed of ferocious dogs have come to light. Numerous fights have been reported to have taken place between dog owners (pet parents) and residents of the housing society over the usage of lift spaces when people petrified of dogs have refused to travel in closed spaces with the canines.

A section of social media users demanded immediate steps to deal with the problem of stray dogs, pointing to several cases of deaths and injuries, including on children, in animal attacks. Due to increasing public anger over such matters, incidents of animal cruelty have also come to light.

The High Court also asked Punjab, Haryana, and the Union Territory of Chandigarh to constitute a committee that will decide on compensation to be paid in cases of accidents caused or attacks by stray animals. These include animals such as cows, bulls, oxen, donkeys, dogs, nilgai, buffaloes, and wild, pet and deserted animals.

This incident is a reminder of this advice. The community hopes that this unfortunate incident will promote greater awareness and precautionary measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
