Uttarakhand: Haridwar district jail turns into Covid-19 hotspot as 43 inmates tested positive

Haridwar: COVID-19 is at its peak with more than 18,000 cases reported daily and 5 deaths within 24 hours yesterday. Corona epidemic is once again showing its havoc in the country. Corona cases are increasing continuously in Uttarakhand. Now 43 prisoners have been found to be Covid-19 positive in Haridwar District Jail, which has created a stir in the jail administration, officials said.

As a precaution, all these prisoners have been kept in separate barracks. The health department team is keeping an eye on them.

425 prisoners were tested
CMO Khagendra Singh says that a sample of 425 prisoners was taken in the district jail. In this 43 corona positives found. As a precaution, the prisoners have been isolated by sanitizing the district jail. They say that samples of prisoners were not taken in the district jail for a long time. No guideline has been issued by the state government for taking samples. Samples have been taken by us for safety’s sake. The health department team will check them daily.

On Monday, Uttarakhand reported 3 fatalities due to the coronavirus disease. Earlier last week, Uttarakhand health department issued a new advisory to all district magistrates to take steps to stop the spread of the infection.

The advisory issued by the office of the mission director of the National Health Mission emphasised on the five-point plan of testing, surveillance, treatment, vaccination and compliance of Covid-appropriate behaviour to halt the spread of the virus in the state.

The state government has urged the district administration to promote Covid-19 appropriate behaviour among the general public through different mediums. The coverage of vaccination should be increased as per the guidelines of the central government, it mentioned.

Healthcare facilities have also been advised to ensure adequate availability of oxygen cylinders, oxygen concentrators, oxygen beds, ICU beds, and essential medicines for the treatment of Covid-19 patients. Oxygen generation plants at healthcare facilities should be operational, the advisory added.
