Vice President Delcy Rodriguez said on Sunday that five small rivers in central Venezuela have been flooded due to heavy rains. Rodriguez said in a televised address that Saturday night’s heavy rain swept away large tree trunks and debris from the mountains, damaging businesses and farmland.

He said that the pumps used to operate the drinking water system of the community were also washed away in the flood waters. Houses and businesses were destroyed and felled trees littered the town’s streets, which were covered with mud and debris, including splintered wood, household items and mangled cars.

Rodriguez said efforts were still being made to locate people trapped under mud and rocks throughout the city. Simultaneously, the army and rescue personnel also searched the banks of the river to find the survivors. The Vice President said that what happened in the city of Tejerias is a tragedy.

Rodriguez said the rain also caused landslides in three other central states on Sunday morning, but did not claim any casualties. The heavy rains triggered by the La Nia weather pattern in recent weeks have brought the total death toll so far to at least 40. Venezuela has faced floods and landslides. Dozens of people have died in recent months in the crisis-hit South American nation as a result of historically high precipitation.
