Senior Congress leader and former Union minister Pandit Sukh Ram has died at 94 stated by his grandson. He was a stalwart of Himachal Pradesh politics. He was admitted to AIIMS in Delhi in May.
Sukh Ram’s grandson, Aashray Sharma, in a Facebook post late Tuesday night, wrote, “Adieu grandfather, “Now the phone will not ring (Alvida Dadajee, Abhi Nahi Bajegee Phone Ki Ghanti).”
Sharma also posted his childhood photo with Sukh Ram on Facebook. However, the post did not mention when he breathed his last.
Sukh Ram was admitted to a hospital in Delhi on May 4 following a brain stroke in Mnali on May 4. He was airlifted to AIIMS in Delhi so that he could get quality treatment.
On May 7, the chief minister of Himachal Pradesh, provided a state chopper for the airlift of the veteran leader.
Sukh Ram’s political career was full of ups and downs. He worked as the Union Minister of State, Communications (Independent Charge) from 1993 to 1996. He was a member of the Lok Sabha from the Mandi constituency of Himachal Pradesh. He had won the Vidhan Sabha elections five times and the Lok Sabha elections three times.
He represented the Mandi Assembly seat from 1963 to 1984. As an Animal Husbandry minister in Himachal Pradesh, he brought high-bred cows from Germany, which led to an increase in the income of the state farmers.
He won the 1984 Lok Sabha polls and served as a junior minister in the Rajiv Gandhi government. He worked in different ministries.
He and his son were expelled from the Congress due to a telecom scam. He had to go to jail for five years in 2011 on a charge of corruption when he was communication minister in 1996.
Floats’ own party
He floated a new party named the Himachal Vikas Congress party, which had a post-poll alliance with the BJP and joined the government.
Before the 2017 Assembly elections, Sukh Ram joined the BJP along with his son Anil Sharma and grandson Aashray Sharma. Sukh Ram’s son, Anil Sharma, is a BJP MLA from Mandi.
Sukh Ram and his grandson Aashray Sharma again joined the Congress before the 2019 Lok Sabha polls to get the ticket from the Congress.
However, Sukh Ram, along with his grandson Aashray Sharma, rejoined the Congress right before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections to get a Congress ticket for Aashray, but he could not win.
Sukh Ram’s other grandson, Aayush Sharma, is an actor and married to Bollywood superstar Salman Khan’s sister.
