New Delhi: Ten people were killed when a private plane crashed north of Russia’s capital Moscow including Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin. The Russian aviation agency has confirmed that the Wagner chief was on board the crashed plane.
Wagner chief Prigozhin was on board the plane that crashed, the agency said, adding that no passengers survived the crash. That is, the Wagner chief has died in this accident. Earlier media reports had claimed that the name of Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin was also included in the list of passengers on board the crashed plane.
Media reports said that there were seven passengers and three crew members on board the jet going from Moscow to St. Petersburg. The jet crashed in the Tver region, north of Moscow. Several videos posted on social media purportedly show the jet crashing, but it is difficult to say how much of it is true.
Russia’s state news agency Tass quoted officials as saying that there were three pilots and seven passengers on board. The accident is being investigated. At the same time, unconfirmed reports on social media Telegram are claiming that the plane was shot down by Russian air defense forces.
The Wagner Group is a Kremlin-allied mercenary force and is headed by Yevgeny Prigozhin. Yevgeny Prigozhin rebelled against President Vladimir Putin in June and marched on Moscow with his troops, but retreated after Belarus intervened. Prior to this, Yevgeny Prigozhin’s private military force Wagner has fought alongside the Russian regular army against Ukraine.
Prigozhin was born on 1 June 1961 in Leningrad. This city is now known as St. Petersburg. His father died in Prigozhin’s childhood and he was brought up by his mother. Talking about his mother, Prigozhin told that his mother used to work in a hospital. Prigozhin joined the sports academy after primary education, he was very good at sports but after the end of the school, Yevgeny Prigozhin joined the mob of petty criminals.
