New Delhi: India’s star weightlifter Mirabai Chanu was unable to perform at her best due to a wrist injury. Despite this, Mirabai Chanu clinches silver medal in the World Championships by lifting a total of 200 kg. Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Mirabai Chanu, competing in the 49kg category, managed a lift of 87kg in snatch and her best effort of 113kg in ‘clean and jerk’ late on Tuesday night in Bogota, Colombia.

The Indian player finished behind Jiang Huihua of China. Jiang Huihua of China won the gold medal with a lift of 206 kg (93 kg+113 kg). Hou Zhihua of China won the bronze medal with a lift of 198 kg (89 kg+109 kg). Hou Zhihua won the gold medal in the Tokyo Olympics.

Chief coach Vijay Sharma told sources, ‘We were not taking any pressure for this tournament. This is the weight Mira lifts regularly. From now on we will start increasing the weight and improving. Mirabai Chanu, the 2017 world champion, suffered a wrist injury during a training session in September. However, Mirabai also participated in the National Games in October despite being injured.
