Radical Sikh preacher Amritpal Singh is on the run for the last 12 days and has not been caught despite a massive search operation by the police. He released a video on Wednesday. The video surfaced after police sources claimed that Amritpal Singh has returned to Punjab and is planning to surrender.
Amritpal Singh is wanted for attacking a police station with an armed mob last month. It is said that when he was traveling through the villages of Hoshiarpur towards Amritsar, the Punjab Police got information about this. Sources told that he is present in this area.
Police launched a house-to-house search operation in Hoshiarpur and neighboring villages on Tuesday night to nab him and his accomplices, who are accused in several criminal cases. However, Amritpal Singh was seen leaving an Innova car at a Gurudwara in Marayan village of Hoshiarpur and running into the fields. Later the police recovered the car.
A cordoned search operation was launched in and around the village, with checkposts and barricades erected on the roads to nab the suspects.
Sources said that Amritpal Singh was planning to give an interview to an international news agency before surrendering, but changed his mind when he realized that he had no chance of survival.
Thousands of people were killed in the violence in Punjab in 1980. Remembering that era, the Punjab Police is under immense pressure to arrest Amritpal and his supporters.
Amritpal Singh went absconding on March 18 after police action against him and members of the pro-Khalistan organization ‘Waris Punjab De’. About three weeks later, he and his supporters stormed the Ajnala police station near Amritsar for the release of an arrested person. Amritpal escaped from the police trap in Jalandhar district. He changed the vehicle and also changed his appearance.
On Tuesday, a new video of Amritpal Singh along with his key aide Papalpreet Singh surfaced on social media. In this, he is seen without a turban and a mask. A CCTV footage without date has come to the fore which is being told of a market in Delhi. In this fugitive Amritpal is seen walking on the road wearing dark glasses. Papalpreet Singh is seen walking behind him carrying a bag.
The Punjab Police has not yet commented on this footage. A senior Delhi Police officer said that they are probing whether the person seen in the video is Amritpal Singh and his associate.
