A major accident occurred due to a stampede during a blanket distribution program in Asansol of West Bardhaman district in West Bengal on Wednesday.

Asansol: Three persons were killed and five others were injured in a stampede during a blanket distribution program in Asansol of West Bardhaman district in West Bengal on Wednesday. Police gave this information. A stampede broke out when people started running towards the stage to get blankets. Presently the matter is being investigated. The police has spoken of strict action against those responsible.

A senior official of the Asansol Durgapur Police Commissionerate said, “Three persons were killed in the stampede while five others were injured.” The injured have been admitted to hospital.

Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly and leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Shubhendu Adhikari was also present at the event, but the stampede broke out when the officials had left.

Blanket distribution program without police permission
This program was organized by a religious group. Police said permission was not taken for the event. Asansol CP SK Neelkantam said, the blanket distribution program was organized without the permission of the police, during which a stampede situation arose. In this, 3 people died and 5 were injured. We will investigate the matter and take action.

“This is a very unfortunate incident…Suvendu Adhikari did not take permission for the event. In the name of blanket distribution, Adhikari called a large number of people to a place, which did not have the capacity to accommodate such a large crowd…Total lack of coordination. Suvendu Adhikari played with the lives of poor people. He is doing politics without any sense of moral responsibility,” Kunal Ghosh, a spokesperson of the TMC told sources.

Leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly Suvendu Adhikari was present at the programme organised by a religious group. The stampede took place after the BJP leader left the venue.
