West Bengal: Minister and Trinamool Congress secretary general Partha Chatterjee arrested by ED in teacher recruitment scam

West Bengal: On Saturday, A big move taken by Enforcement Directorate in Teaching requirement scam. Trinamool Congress secretary general and West Bengal minister Partha Chatterjee was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate after being questioned for around 26 hours in connection with a money laundering case linked to the alleged teacher recruitment scam in the state.

The arrest comes a day after Rs 20 crore was recovered from Arpita Mukherjee, a close aide of West Bengal minister Partha Chatterjee. “This money is suspected to be linked to the SSC scam,” the ED said in a statement. The ED also said that over 20 mobile phones have also been recovered from Arpita Mukherjee’s premises, the purpose and use of which is being ascertained. Apart from this, the ED raided 11 locations, including the premises of Minister of State for Education Paresh C Adhikary, LA and ex-president of West Bengal Board of Primary Education Manik Bhattacharya, and others.

The Enforcement Directorate further said in a statement,“A number of incriminating documents, records, details of dubious companies, electronic devices, foreign currency and gold have been recovered from the premises of persons linked to the scam.” Chatterjee, being taken to the ED’s office at the CGO Complex in Salt Lake, will be produced in court later in the day.

ED officials, who grilled Chatterjee overnight in connection with the case, had started the interrogation at his residence at 8am on Friday. “He was not cooperating with our officers who were questioning him since Friday morning. He will be produced before a court during the day,” an ED official told media.From 2014 till 2021, Chatterjee was the Education Minister in Mamata Banerjee’s cabinet.Partha Chatterjee also holds the portfolio of Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs. In 2001, Partha Chatterjee was elected as an MLA from Behala Paschim on a Trinamool Congress ticket and has been holding the South Kolkata seat since then. Before Mamata Banerjee’s party formed the government in 2011, Chatterjee was Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly from 2006 to 2011.
