New Delhi: All the three major social media giants – Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp – experienced a brief outage across the globe during the wee hours of April 9. According to reports, apps failed to load and the outage went on for over 30 minutes. However, the apps are now back online.
To note, this is the second major outage suffered by Facebook and its apps in a month.
The outage was detected after, after users started to complain about the issue on their twitter handles. Instagram users reported that they experienced a brief outage at around 2.45 am IST. While, DownDetector, a website that tracks outages, showed a spike in reports during the same time for Facebook and WhatsApp. The outage seemed to be global as users worldwide reported the issue.
Facebook was the most affected platform followed by Instagram and WhatsApp, as nearly 57 percent of FB users faced complete blackout, 37 percent had trouble logging in while 4 percent of users had issues with pictures on the social media app. The brief outage took place around 4:00 AM IST.
More than 154,100 outage reports on Facebook, 80,200 on Instagram and 1,300 on WhatsApp were reported on Downdetector.
During the issue, Facebook showed the message “We’re sorry, but something went wrong. Please try again.” Instagram users were also unable to load their feed during the outage. Similarly, on WhatsApp, users were not able to send or receive messages.
However, the services were restored after 30 minutes of a brief outage. According to reports, a Facebook spokesperson acknowledged the issue and said, “a configuration change caused Facebook services to be unavailable to some people. We quickly investigated and resolved the issue.”
For the uninitiated, this is the second time within a month wherein Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook went down. Earlier on March 19, all the three social media apps had suffered a massive outage globally, when the services were stalled for close to 45 minutes. That time too, due to outage, users all over the world could not send or receive messages on WhatsApp for almost an hour, the Facebook feed refused to load and Instagram too faced issues in refreshing. As per Downdetector, there were one lakh reports related to WhatsApp alone.
The parent company of WhatsApp and Insta had then blamed a technical issue for the outage, “A technical issue caused people to have trouble accessing some Facebook services. We resolved this issue for everyone, and we apologize for any inconvenience,” a Facebook spokesperson was quoted saying.
