Prince Charles once received a kiss on the cheek from a yesteryear Bollywood celebrity, Padmini Kolhapure, while he was in Mumbai.
Mumbai: Elizabeth II has passed away. The Queen breathed her last on Thursday, September 8, signalling the end of an era. As a result of her death, Prince Charles, her son, is now King of the United Kingdom. While everyone is aware of his legacy, few may be aware of the special relationship Prince Charles has with Bollywood actress Padmini Kolhapure. He once received a kiss on the cheek from a yesteryear Bollywood celebrity, Padmini Kolhapure, while he was in Mumbai. The worldwide media paid a lot of attention to this.
Prince Charles is now officially the king of the UK. This is because of the passing of Queen Elizabeth II on September 8. He visited Mumbai many years ago. He spent some time on the sets of the Hindi movie Ahista Ahista (1981), as he wanted to know how movies were shot in India.
Padmini Kolhapure, the film’s leading actress, had a meeting with Prince Charles on the sets and gave him a surprise kiss. The kiss spread like a wildfire and the British media started referring to Padmini Kolhapure as’ the woman who kissed Prince Charles’.
While Charles was visiting Mumbai, I didn’t know that he wanted to see the shooting of an Indian film. At that time, we were busy shooting for Ahista Ahista at Rajkamal Studios. Shashikala ji did his Indian aarti, an Indian tradition, and I just welcomed him with a gentle kiss on his cheek. It became a talking point in those days. When I visited London for a holiday, one of the British immigration officers asked me, ‘Are you the same person who kissed Prince Charles’? I was left embarrassed.
Ahista Ahista is one of the most successful movies of Kolhapure. This film fetched her a Filmfare Special Award. Esmayeel Shroff directed the film. Padmini Kolhapure, alongside Shammi Kapoor and Nanda, were in the lead roles. The music for the film was composed by Khayyam.
