Chandigarh: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab on Saturday named environmentalist Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal and entrepreneur, philanthropist and social activist Bikramjit Singh Sahni as its candidates for the Rajya Sabha seats from the state. Both are Padma Shri awardees.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann tweeted, “I am very happy to inform you that Aam Aadmi Party is nominating two Padma Shri awardees as members of Rajya Sabha… Padma Shri Sant Balbir, an environment lover. Singh Seechewal, 2nd Padma Shri Vikramjit Singh Sahni belongs to Punjabi culture… My best wishes to both of them. Let us inform that the term of the Rajya Sabha members of Ambika Soni (Congress) and Balwinder Singh Bhundar (Shiromani Akali Dal) from Punjab ends on July 4.

Who is Balbir Singh Seechewal?
Padma Shri awardee Balbir Singh Seechewal is a renowned environmental activist and social activist. He was awarded the Padma Shri for the rejuvenation of the 160 km long tributary of the Sutlej and Beas rivers. He has also built schools and colleges for the underprivileged at different places in Punjab.
Seechewal has received the SAARC Environment Award and has also been honored by the Dalai Lama. Seechewal, popularly known as ‘Eco Baba’, was honored by Time magazine as one of the top 30 environmental heroes in the world. Seechewal’s work was supported by the late President APJ Abdul Kalam, who had visited him twice in his village Seechewal.
Who is Vikramjit Singh Sahni?
Padma Shri awardee Vikramjit Singh Sahni is an entrepreneur, educationist and philanthropist. He is the International President of WPO (World Punjabi Organisation), which works to promote social, economic and cultural bonds in 22 countries. He evacuated more than 500 Afghan Hindus and Sikhs by sending three chartered flights and rehabilitated their children besides ensuring free education.
Sahni’s selfless service during COVID-19 includes artificial intelligence-powered mobile testing clinics, 2,000 oxygen cylinders and langar service serving 1 lakh people every day. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has also honored Sahni with the Anmol Sikh Ratan Award for his exemplary services. Sahni is the founder of Sun Foundation, which runs free skill development centers for needy youth with disabilities.
