Hollywood actor Will Smith has stepped down from Hollywood’s Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He took this decision because of his slapping incident with comedian and presenter Chris Rock on the stage at the Oscars 2022 award ceremony.
He termed this incident “shocking, painful, and inexcusable.” Remember, Will Smith was adjudged the best actor for his role in “King Richard.”
Academy takes a serious note
The academy had “seriously discussed” asking him to leave. As per the source, it was “a very huge decision” which would have “consequences within the show.” They also said that making a decision within a short span was a “nightmare and borderline impossible.”
“I betrayed the trust of the academy. I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. I am heartbroken,” Smith said in a statement.
“So, I am resigning from membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and will accept any further consequences the Board deems appropriate,” he said.
Rock jokes over Smith’s wife’s appearance
At the Oscars ceremony last Sunday, Smith marched up to the stage after Rock made a joke regarding the appearance of his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. That turned Smith’s face red, and he smacked at the face of Rock. This shocked everyone.
A little less than an hour later, Smith gave a tearful speech on stage as he accepted the best actor award for his role in “King Richard.”
Rock’s joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, made a reference to the 1997 film “G.I. Jane,” in which actress Demi Moore shaved her head. It was unclear whether Rock was aware that Jada Pinkett Smith has a condition that causes hair loss.
In his statement, Smith added: “Change takes time, and I am committed to doing the work to ensure that I never again allow violence to overtake reason.”
Film Academy accepts Smith’s resignation
David Rubin said, “We have received and accepted Will Smith’s immediate resignation from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.” However, the resignation may not put a plug in the controversy just yet. He added, “We will continue to move forward with our disciplinary proceedings against Mr. Smith for violations of the Academy’s Standards of Conduct in advance of our next scheduled board meeting on April 18.”
It is expected that Smith’s inhuman behaviour on the stage could strip him of his Best Actor award that he got for his role in King Richard. Legal action might be taken against him for assaulting Chris on a public platform.
Will slapped Chris because the latter pranked Will’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, with a shaved head. Jada suffers from a condition called alopecia, which causes hair loss. After getting the Best Actor award, Will apologised to the Academy but not to Chris.
He added, “The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home. I betrayed the trust of the Academy. “
The slapping incident on the Oscar award platform was a shocking incident. Such incidents should be avoided because a huge audience watches the Oscar award ceremony all over the world. Its effect would be detrimental to society.
