Winning the Thomas Cup is Like Winning the World Cup…I Also Want Respect: Big Statement from India’s Legendary Badminton Player

Chirag Shetty: The Indian cricket team returned after winning the T20 World Cup 2024 title and got a warm welcome in the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the players and coaching staff of the team and appreciated their efforts. Apart from this, the state governments made their own announcements for the players. Regarding which India’s veteran badminton player Chirag Shetty has raised questions.

In fact, badminton player Chirag Shetty has described Thomas Cup as equivalent to winning the Cricket World Cup. He has said that if Indian cricketers are getting so much respect then they should also get the same respect. Speaking to a media group, Thomas Cup winner Chirag Shetty said, ‘Winning the Thomas Cup is equivalent to winning the World Cup. When the government honors World Cup winners, they should have recognized my efforts as well. I have no complaints with cricket, we all celebrated India’s victory, but the state government did not even honor me, leave alone giving a cash prize.’

After returning to India, a victory parade was organized in Mumbai in the honor of the cricket team in which a crowd of lakhs participated. Besides, a felicitation ceremony for the players was also held at Wankhede Stadium. After this, the Maharashtra government has announced a reward of Rs 11 crore to 4 Mumbai players Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Shivam Dubey, Yashasvi Jaiswal, who played an important role in Team India’s victory in the T20 World Cup 2024.

However, Chirag Shetty, who comes from Mumbai, has alleged discrimination in gestures. The pair of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Ranki Reddy won the Thomas Cup title for the first time in 2022 by defeating Indonesia. Chirag Shetty has given many medals to India in badminton.
