According to Hindu mythology, Lord Krishna was the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu, who was born in the Dvapara Yuga at midnight, inside a prison cell in Mathura where his parents Devaki and Vasudeva were lodged. Owing to a threat to his life, he was then taken to a town near Mathura, where he grew up with foster parents Nanda and Yashoda, and siblings Balarama and Subhadra. In celebration of the birth of Shri Krishna, his father Nand ji distributed sweets throughout Gokul and celebrated the festival. At that time, that festival was celebrated as ‘Nandotsav’.

On the day of Janmashtami, all the temples of Shri Krishna are decorated, all the temples are worshiped. People keep fast for God and various special sweets are made in every Hindu household. It is believed that on this day Lord Krishna comes and eat sweets at night, that is why people break their fast at mid-night and eat sweets. There is also a belief behind breaking the fast at night and eating sweets that Shri Krishna was born at night, so people eat sweets at night time to celebrate Krishna’s birthday.

For the Hindu community living in India and around the world, Janmashtami is an important celebration and the day itself is considered to be supremely auspicious. Today, on the occasion of this beloved Hindu Lord birth, take a moment to thank him for everything positive that we have in our life, and pray for forgiveness for any of our misdoings.
