New Delhi: Rajya Sabha on Thursday approved a landmark bill to reserve one-third seats for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. The 128th Constitution Amendment Bill was approved in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday with a two-thirds majority. With the approval of Rajya Sabha, the landmark bill has been passed by the Parliament.
New Delhi: Rajya Sabha on Thursday approved a landmark bill to reserve one-third seats for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. The 128th Constitution Amendment Bill was approved in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday with a two-thirds majority.
With the approval of Rajya Sabha, the landmark bill has been passed by the Parliament. The Women’s Reservation Bill, the first law to be passed by both Houses in the new Parliament House, received 214 votes in favor while none were against it in the Upper House. There were no abstentions during the voting proceedings held under the chairmanship of Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar.
After this , PM Modi hailed the passage of the women’s quota bill, calling it a “defining moment in our nation’s democratic journey”. He extended his gratitude to all the Rajya Sabha members who voted for the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam.
He said, “With the passage of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam in Parliament, we usher in an era of stronger representation and empowerment for the women of India. This is not merely a legislation; it is a tribute to the countless women who have made our nation. India has been enriched by their resilience and contributions.”.
Sharing photographs with women MPs after the bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha, PM Modi said, “It is heartening to see the harbingers of change coming together to celebrate the very law they have supported.” He said that with the passage of the bill, “India stands at the cusp of a brighter, more inclusive future with our women power at the core of this transformation”.
The bill titled ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Act’ has a provision to reserve 33% seats for women in the Lok Sabha, state assemblies and Delhi Assembly. The quota will not apply to Rajya Sabha or State Legislative Councils.
Reservation of seats after delimitation will take effect after the relevant data of the first census is published. The Women’s Reservation Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, with 454 members supporting it and two opposing it.
