Like the semi-finals, the bronze medal match was also very exciting and the winner was decided through a penalty shootout. The Indian women’s hockey team had earlier won a medal at the 2016 Melbourne Commonwealth Games.
The match turned in the last few seconds
The Indian women’s hockey team clinched the bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games by defeating defending champions New Zealand 2-1 in a shoot-out here on Sunday. The Indian team was leading 1-0 in the final moments of the match but in less than the last 30 seconds, they gave a penalty corner to the opposing team.
This converted into a penalty stroke and Olivia Meri equalized New Zealand, after which the match was drawn into a shoot-out. India won the shoot-out while maintaining patience. After the heartbreaking loss against Australia in the controversial semi-final, the Indian team, playing in this match, performed well throughout the match and won the medal.
India were 1-0 ahead at half time thanks to a goal from Salima Tete. Neha Goel almost doubled the team’s lead after the break but New Zealand did not allow India to consolidate their position due to the good performance of their defence.
The Indian women’s team had previously won the silver medal in the 2006 Commonwealth Games for the last time. At the same time, in the 2002 Commonwealth Games, Indian women won the gold medal. In such a situation, after 16 years, the Indian women’s hockey team has again got a medal in the Commonwealth Games.
