WFI, poor show
New Delhi: Despite the stunning outing at the recently concluded Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022, Indian athletes won medals in most of the categories. All the sporting federation members were jubilant regarding the athletes’ remarkable show, except for the Wrestling Federation of India, who were left less impressed.
The federation was hoping for a better performance from the wrestlers, expecting more gold medals . However, four out of six male athletes bagged gold medals in their kitty. Despite having easy competition, the women only managed to win two gold medals.
“It was not a stunning show by our female wrestlers.” If you are not winning against weak opponents, then how does it reflect on your performance? ” A fuming WFI official said
“We are going to sit with the wrestlers and review the performance.” Anshu could not even launch a proper attack against a much older opponent. Wrestlers should think about it.
“India is undeniably a CWG powerhouse, but I don’t believe it was properly reflected in our results,” the official added.
“The national federation is not pleased that four Indian women wrestlers could not take advantage of a weak field,” said an official.
Among women, only Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik bagged gold, while Anshu Malik, who was also a gold medal contender, had to settle for silver in the 57kg category.
Pooja Gehlot (50 kg), Divya Kakran (68 kg) and Pooja Sihag (76 kg) returned with bronze in spite of weaker opponents.
