In a resolute move, X Corp, led by Elon Musk, has enforced stringent measures by banning a staggering 212,627 accounts in India during March. The primary reasons behind these bans were linked to the promotion of child sexual exploitation and non-consensual nudity.
Further intensifying its stance against online threats, X Corp also removed 1,235 accounts for promoting terrorism on its platform in India. This robust action underscores X’s commitment to ensuring user safety and combating nefarious activities on its microblogging platform.
X Corp’s monthly report, in compliance with the new IT Rules, 2021, sheds light on its efforts to maintain a safe online environment. During this reporting period, the platform received 5,158 complaints from Indian users through its grievance redressal mechanisms.
Addressing user concerns, X Corp processed 86 appeals related to account suspensions. Following a thorough review, 7 of these suspensions were overturned, while the remainder remained in effect.
Moreover, the platform received 29 general account-related inquiries from Indian users during the reporting period. The most common complaints included issues such as ban evasion (3,074), hateful conduct (412), sensitive adult content (953), and abuse/harassment (359).
This recent crackdown mirrors a similar trend from the previous reporting period, where X Corp banned 506,173 accounts in India between January 26 and February 25 (2024). During the same period, the platform also removed 1,982 accounts for promoting terrorism within the country.
X Corp’s proactive approach towards enforcing policies and addressing user complaints highlights its dedication to maintaining a safe and secure online environment for users in India and beyond.
