Youth arrested for impersonating an IAS officer in order to defraud people to obtain Amazon gifts

Jaisalmer: Police arrested a man from Rajasthan’s Dungarpur as he was posing himself as an IAS officer and Jaisalmer collector Tina Dabi.  He was duping people by using Tina Dabi’s photo as his social media display picture.

The matter was highlighted when Urban Improvement Trust secretary (Rajasthan Administrative Service) Sunita Choudhary got a message seeking an Amazon gift card in Tina Dabi’s name.

The youth had been sending messages to suspected people through WhatsApp and demanding Amazon gifts of various amounts. His modus operandi was looking genuine as his texts were written in impeccable English.

UIT Secretary (RAS) Sunita Choudhary said she received a message on Monday evening, which she first believed was from Tina Dabi, who texted her. The fraudster is seeking Amazon gift cards from me through the messages. But I don’t use Amazon, “Choudhary said.

I called Tina Dabi to get the entire matter. Jaisalmer collector Tina Dabi, who was shocked to learn that someone was cheating after taking her name, immediately called the SP regarding the matter.

The SP of Jaisalmer came into action and traced the number with the help of a cyber team; his location was found in Dungarpur district. He then called the Dungarpur SP and finally the youth was arrested. He is now being questioned.

Jaisalmer district collector Tina Dabi said she wants people to remain alert if messages come from unknown numbers.
