AAP candidate Shelly Oberoi elected Delhi mayor, BJP Shikha Rai withdraws nomination

New Delhi: On Wednesday, AAP candidate Dr Shelley Oberoi has been declared the Mayor unopposed after the BJP candidate withdrew his nomination. Shali Oberoi has once again become the Mayor of Delhi Municipal Corporation.

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal has congratulated Dr Shelly Oberoi on becoming the Mayor of MCD for the second time. He tweeted, ‘Congratulations Shelley and Elle on becoming Mayor and Deputy Mayor unopposed this time. Best wishes to both. People have high expectations from us. Work hard to live up to their expectations.’

Two candidates had filed nominations for the mayoral election, namely incumbent Mayor Oberoi and Shikha Rai of the BJP. Shaili Oberoi was elected as the Mayor of Delhi on 22 February. He defeated BJP’s Rekha Gupta by a margin of 34 votes. Shaili got 150 votes, while Rekha got 116 votes out of a total of 266 votes.

Delhi BJP has decided to withdraw from Municipal Corporation Mayor and Mayor elections. The party said that this was done because, despite all our efforts, the Aam Aadmi Party is not allowing the formation of standing committees and ward committees, due to which no work can be done in the municipal corporation. BJP nominated Shikha Rai for Mayor and Soni Pandey for Deputy Mayor.

The post of mayor in the national capital is elected for five terms of one year each. In the first year, the post of mayor is for women, while in the third year, it is for the reserved category.

In other three years (second, fourth and fifth) this post is for unreserved category. Official sources had said on April 3 that Oberoi would remain in office till the election of a new mayor.
