Amid continuous rainfall, Jammu-Srinagar National Highway closed for traffic due to landslides

Jammu: On Monday, due to landslides amid continuous rains in Ramban, the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway has been shut down for traffic. At the same time, the Jammu and Kashmir State Disaster Management Authority (JKDMA) will ordered to remain closed all schools in Srinagar on Monday due to adverse weather conditions and an avalanche warning.

This action taken as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students. However, teaching and non-teaching staff are required to report for duty to oversee the situation and safeguard the institutional assets of their respective schools.

After the landslides, cracks have appeared in the mountains in Mehad, Kishtwari Pathar and Gangru Ramsu areas, due to which the highway has been completely closed. Apart from this, vehicular movement has also been stopped from both sides due to large boulders falling from the mountains due to incessant rains.

According to an official, efforts are on by the administration to clear the landslide, teams have been working to remove debris and boulders since 5 am. The Srinagar centre of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted adverse weather from April 26 to April 30, due to which rain and snowfall is likely in the higher reaches and hailstorm at some places.

After this prediction, residents of the district, particularly those living near the Jhelum River, its tributaries and rivulets, have been advised to avoid going near these water bodies and restrict their activities till the weather improves. Meanwhile, the general public has been asked to contact the Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) Srinagar and Police Control Room Srinagar for any information.
