Earlier this week on April 6, an earthquake of magnitude 4.6 on the Richter Scale occurred 140 km ENE of Portblair in Adaman and Nicobar islands. No casualties were reported in the quake.
Why do earthquakes happen?
The earth is mainly made up of four layers. Inner core, outer core, mantle and crust. The crust and the upper mantle core are called the lithosphere. This 50 kilometer thick layer is divided into several sections called tectonic plates. These tectonic plates keep vibrating in their place and when there is too much vibration in this plate, an earthquake is felt.
