Assam CM Sarma Reacts Strongly to Akbaruddin Owaisi’s Threat to Police Officer, Urges EC to Cancel Candidature

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has strongly condemned the alleged threat made by Akbaruddin Owaisi, brother of AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi, towards a police inspector in Hyderabad. Sarma remarked that such an incident would have been swiftly resolved within five minutes in Assam, emphasizing his disapproval of appeasement politics.

The incident occurred when Akbaruddin Owaisi was booked for openly threatening a police inspector who requested compliance with the model code of conduct for the upcoming assembly polls.

“If this occurred in Assam, the matter would have been settled within five minutes. Due to the politics of appeasement in Telangana, neither BRS nor Congress is addressing the issue. Openly threatening the police creates a sense of insecurity,” stated Assam CM Sarma.

He further called upon the Election Commission of India to “cancel” Akbaruddin Owaisi’s candidature in response to the incident.

The police registered a case against Akbaruddin Owaisi under section 353 (obstructing official duties) IPC and other relevant sections. Responding to the FIR, Owaisi refuted the allegations, presenting video footage and asserting that the police officer had wrongfully intervened.

During a campaign event in Lalitabagh, Hyderabad, Akbaruddin Owaisi urged the policeman to leave, hinting that a signal to his supporters could force the inspector to run from the venue.

Asaduddin Owaisi, the AIMIM president, defended his brother’s remarks, arguing that the police officer should not have intervened as there were only “five minutes” left for the campaign time to conclude for the day.

Akbaruddin Owaisi is contesting from the Chandrayangutta constituency, a stronghold of AIMIM. The party has previously won this seat in 2014 and 2018.

The state of Telangana is set to go to polls on November 30 in a single phase, with the counting of votes, along with four other states, scheduled for December 3.
