BBC strongly objects to ‘Govt-Funded’ Labelling on Twitter

Washington: The British Broadcasting Corporation ‘BBC’ is now at loggerheads with Twitter. Twitter has labeled BBC’s verified Twitter account as ‘Government Funded Media’, seeing which the owners of ‘BBC’ have become angry. On behalf of ‘BBC’, an objection has been raised before the Twitter management in this matter. ‘BBC’ said that Twitter should remove this label from us immediately.

‘BBC’ is a company established years ago in Britain, which was also operated by the British government, from where it used to get funds. Gradually, he launched his broadcast channels and news portals across the world. And, by the beginning of the 21st century, it became a popular news service. However, the name still remained the British Broadcasting Company ‘BBC’. Today ‘BBC’ has television programs, radio shows, podcasts and breaking news portals in many languages.

‘BBC’ has many accounts on Twitter. In such a situation, Twitter is putting special labels based on the identity of government and non-government organizations, so the account of ‘BBC’ with 2.2 million followers also came under that purview. Twitter has labeled ‘Government Funded Media’ on ‘BBC’, on which ‘BBC’ has objected.

‘BBC’ has said that Twitter should not do this. Twitter should immediately remove the label of ‘Government Funded Media’ from our account as we are an ‘independent’ news organization.

The British Broadcasting Corporation has strongly objected to the new label and said it is speaking to the social media company about the designation on the Twitter account to “resolve this issue as soon as possible”.

Twitter has this to say on labeling
At the same time, about Twitter’s ‘label’, it has been said on Twitter’s website that its label is applied to those accounts which work as government institutions or which get funds from the government. Twitter states, “State-affiliated media accounts are outlets where the state exercises control over editorial content through financial resources, direct or indirect political pressures, and/or control over production and distribution”.

Now it remains to be seen whether Twitter will remove the label of ‘Government Funded Media’ from BBC’s account or it will remain.
