Bengal Governor Demands Immediate Arrest of Trinamool Leader Amid Sandeshkhali Unrest

The ongoing unrest in West Bengal’s Sandeshkhali has taken a new turn as Governor CV Ananda Bose demands swift action from the state government. He has urged authorities to arrest Trinamool Congress leader Shahjahan Sheikh, who stands accused of sexual atrocities and land grab in the region. The Governor’s directive comes after fresh protests erupted on Monday, with locals ransacking properties belonging to TMC leaders accused of tormenting villagers.

Calls for Action and Investigations

In the wake of escalating tensions, Governor CV Ananda Bose has given a 72-hour ultimatum to the state government to apprehend Sheikh. The Governor has also requested an investigation into the alleged incident involving a child being thrown away by miscreants in Sandeshkhali.

The situation intensified after the Calcutta High Court’s recent order directing the police to arrest Sheikh. The court clarified that there is no stay on the arrest order, expressing surprise that reports of atrocities in Sandeshkhali were raised with the state police four years ago. Advocates involved in the case emphasized that no stay had been granted on Sheikh’s arrest.

Fresh Protests and High Court Involvement

Fresh protests erupted as locals, armed with sticks, targeted houses in the Bermajur area of Sandeshkhali, focusing their anger on local TMC panchayat leader Shankar Sardar. The police intervened to restore calm, emphasizing the volatile nature of the situation.

In response to the unrest, the Calcutta High Court has directed the involvement of various authorities, including Sheikh, the Enforcement Directorate, the CBI, the district superintendent of police, and the state’s home secretary. This development arises from a suo motu matter initiated on the allegations of sexual atrocities against women and land grab of tribal people.

The situation in Sandeshkhali remains tense as authorities grapple with escalating protests and demands for justice.
